My Students

My students are definitely tech savvy! I try to implement as much technology as possible. STEM in the classroom is important to our smallest learners. Many don't have these resources at home. Small group meetings across all subject areas occur daily in order to meet the needs of my struggling students as well as those that need an academic challenge. I try to implement Science as much as I can. Even during my English Language Arts block.

My classroom consists of twenty second graders who are eager to learn and explore STEM projects!

My school is Title I and every student (100%) receives free lunch. Even though some of my students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds that does not mean that they cannot learn or progress. They just need a little extra push, and people who believe in them. My students love things like technology and working on math and science activities.

My Project

My students will use the requested materials during our Science block. It will help me to implement more STEM lessons into my curriculum. I will divide the students into six groups. Each group will have between 4-5 students. They will get one Botley the Coding Robot to design. Botley will help my curious young students to learn early STEM skills while playing and having fun. He teaches kids to code with active, screen-free play that's perfect for promoting critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Since they will be working in groups, this will also help them with social skills and how to properly work together. Botley features completely screen-free coding. That means there is no need for any type of tablet or device. He has an easy-to-use remote-control programmer that will transmit the groups commands and will send Botley rolling! Botley uses something called Smart Logic. This gives Botley the ability to detect objects in front of him and to avoid them. He can also follow looping commands that the students design. What makes me most excited about this project will be my students ability to create obstacle courses and follow black-line paths that Botley can be programed to complete. My students will have 40 coding cards to choose from to create an abundance of commands for their robot to follow.

This coding robot will transform how my students use STEM in the classroom, to work collaboratively together to make their robot function.

Botley will introduce coding in an easy and friendly way. This coding robot was the 2019 Toy Associations Toy of the Year. I think my students would greatly benefit from this fun and innovative STEM toy! Learning and having fun CAN go hand in hand! Can you help my second graders to get Botley ROLLING?
