My Students

My students are shy and energetic, experienced art makers and tentative novices. They are risk-takers, they are funny; sometimes they are shy while other times they are bold and articulate. Some take exotic vacations around the world and others have never left our city. My youngest art students are curious preschoolers and the oldest are eager fifth graders, getting ready to begin their adventure in middle school next year. Fortunately, I have the privileged of teaching a diverse population of students at my urban, public elementary school. Our teachers and staff create a loving and safe environment for all learners while our parents work tirelessly to make sure all students have equal opportunities regardless of privilege.

My Project

You see, in order for our young, creative minds to mold lumps of cold clay into thought provoking and technical ceramic masterpieces, there are a few nitty-gritty basics our ceramics studio is in need of. At our elementary school, students learn about the entire process, like painting kiln shelves with kiln wash so that our work doesn't stick after firing at high temperatures, loading the kiln strategically with stilts and supports so that the maximum amount of work fits inside, cutting the clay, and preparing the glazes. They know that art is a process. In order to dive into the creation of work, they must plan, prepare and maintain a tidy and efficient studio. Resupplying our studio with the essentials is a necessary step in our creative process and without new and functioning equipment we will all be at an artistic standstill.
