My Students
Aww man, I just wrote on the board and I'm filled with chalk dust all over...ugh. Remember those days when you would be covered with chalk dust, sneezing, and coughing? Well that dust is what has been causing asthmatic episodes for some of my special education students.
Our class consists of students receiving special education services for various disabilities.
We are a below poverty level middle school located in the South Bronx, NYC. A great majority of our students are asthmatic, as is a majority of people in our borough. Some students are unable to sit near the chalk board or work on the board due to their respiratory condition. Although the students use mini dry erase boards with low odor markers, to teach an entire class we need a new classroom board. Unfortunately, budget cuts to the schools does not help. If we can reduce the triggers that cause asthma in our students we can then provide a healthier environment, less asthmatic episodes, improve attendance and academic performance. It is little changes like this that can have a major impact on student learning and good health.
My Project
We are asking donors to please assist us in attaining a large dry erase white board to be used to teach in the classroom. This double sided dry erase board, in combination with low odor markers, will provide students with a chalkdust free environment, which will reduce allergens that contribute to their asthmatic conditions.
Achoo, cough, cough, sniffle sniffle..ugh dust!
The solution is simple. We just need your help to buy a new whiteboard so asthma episodes will be reduced in our special education classroom.
