My Students
Last school year, our classroom book center was in really bad shape. This year, thanks to friends of DonorsChoose, our classroom library has been in demand with new books! We need to continue expanding our selection of preschool board books to refresh their interest in reading with new titles.
My early childhood Special Education students have been identified as having developmental delays and autism.
They attend a public elementary school and range in age from 2-6 years old. My students are so eager to learn and are excited about coming to school. I want to continue building on their enthusiasm for learning!
Our school-wide demographic data from 2009 reflects that our 95% of our students are considered minorities. Our Title One school is located in a high-crime and high-poverty neighborhood, and 77.6% of our total student body is identified as economically disadvantaged. For some of our students, our school building is the only safe haven they know from the crime and domestic violence that takes place in the community. Their families struggle day to day to provide just the essentials like housing and food, and school supplies and learning materials like picture books are often considered a luxury.
My Project
I want to have a library of sturdy books available to my preschoolers with special needs that will encourage them to love reading at an early age. I have asked for a library of 50 items that includes small-sized board books just right for little hands, lap-sized board books to share with a grown-up or a friend, and washable, soft cloth books for my developmentally youngest students who still put inedible items in their mouths. Dr. Seuss and Curious George are included as some of my favorites that I hope will be their favorites, too. This library will provide students with special needs access to sturdy books that will stand up to heavy use over time, and expose them to age-appropriate and exciting text. This library will encourage a love of reading, build student background and content knowledge, allow students to visit new places, and encourage their imaginations.
Many of my students are not exposed to books at home, and most have never been to the public library.
It is my hope that these preschool board books will foster a lifelong love of reading that they will carry with them throughout their lives.
