This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day in my classroom is anything but typical. This year, we have taken a strengths-based approach to learning, and my students have discovered different talents within themselves. As a group, we are beginning to appreciate others for their strengths, and find new ways to showcase our own.

My scholars are 32 energetic sixth grade GATE students.

They are a group that has been together since second grade, and are about to embark on a new journey into middle school. They are a passionate, kind, and resilient bunch that perseveres even through difficult situations. They are eager to learn, and have a thirst for reading and using technology. This year, they have strengthened their technological abilities, and are learning to integrate new components of media into presentations and projects. My school has started and arts program that teaches students dance, signing, art, computer programming, and various musical instruments both throughout the day and after school. While the students are excited to learn the new programming elements, they are held back due to the fact that they don't have the necessary tools to take their progress to the next level.

My Project

This iPad will assist my students to create book trailers like the movie trailers they have seen for their favorite movies. These trailers will be based on books that they recommend for their peers to read. They will infuse the video with body gestures, music, lighting, and scenery. Next, they will use their acting abilities to portray the storyline (without giving away key elements of the plot). Students will use the captions and subtitles to advertise the necessity of reading their particular book. We will showcase a variety of genres of books, several authors, and different ranges of reading levels to broadcast for families at our school. iPad technology will teach students to film, edit, and publish these movie trailers to air throughout our campus in an effort to increase awareness of different literature and a desire to read. They will learn how to trim, edit, and embed media using the iPad. With this project, excitement and discussions about literature will develop.

Using the built-in camera, we will shoot video footage of our own and embed various quotes from novels that we have read.

We can start immediately by becoming familiar with different uses of media through the iPad technology. By taking a book that they are passionate about, and presenting their trailer to others, students will start looking at literature differently. This will impact my students' lives, because it will spark an interest in reading and develop a love of literature.
