Boosting Math Skills & Self-Confidence With Board Games (Title 1)

My Project

Playing board games is entertaining, but that is only one of the many benefits they offer. Through board games, students develop social–emotional skills, teamwork, communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical-thinking skills as they work to create winning strategies. For my Title I second graders near Ft. Bragg, these skills are especially important. Many of my students come from military families and face frequent transitions, so opportunities to build self confidence, strengthen relationships, and feel connected are essential.

Board games naturally bring people together.

They promote laughter, shared experiences, healthy competition, and meaningful conversations. If funded before the holiday break, I hope to send each of my students home with a board game they can enjoy over the winter holidays. This gift would give them something fun and new to play with their families and friends—providing a break from screens and encouraging more face-to-face interaction.

Since Covid, the way we teach has changed dramatically, but one thing that should never fade is strong family engagement. The games I’ve chosen are both fun and educational, allowing students to continue practicing math skills they’ve worked hard on this year. My class especially loves math, so sending home math-based games gives them a chance to strengthen their academic skills in a joyful and low-stress way.

Because I teach at a Title I school, I know that not all students look forward to the holidays. This project would allow every child to take home something exciting, meaningful, and supportive of both their learning and their well-being. More than just improving math skills, these games will help my students build confidence, develop social skills, nurture their mental health, and create positive family memories they’ll carry with them into the new year.
