I teach 10th grade DC History and 11th grade US History in a public charter high school. 95% of my students come from one of the areas most plagued by crime and poverty in the District. The resources available to the students in surrounding areas are not afforded to my students--resources that many of us take for granted.
Our school does not have the money to buy many supplemental reading material for our students. I am always looking for extra resources and thinking of creative ways to present the material to my students.
By having variety of history books, DVDs, and a globe, my students will become more engaged in the class content and better readers. This year, my students are working on a National History Day project. This year's theme, Innovation in History, will require them to find many resources to start the research process. These books will be of great benefit to us. The books will also be written on a level that they will be able to understand. Our school is a college preparatory academy, so these books will increase their literacy skills, which they so desperately need in order to be prepared for college. My students are on average three grade levels behind their peers in higher income areas, so we have three years to boost their reading levels up to an appropriate level so they can compete in colleges and universities across the country. These books will be invaluable to this end. The DVDs and globe will enhance instruction in the classroom so I can give students visuals of ideas and concepts we are talking about in class.
Please help make this wish a reality and give them a chance to have more reading material and visuals that they will find interesting. These resources will certainly boost their literacy skills and better prepare them for college.
