Boosting Brain Flow and Banishing Boredom: Flexible Seating for Flexible Minds

My Students
My students are hungry for knowledge! It is my daily mission to feed their curiosity and keep them coming back for more. Our classroom motto is "Esprit de Corps in Four." We work hard to establish a collaborative atmosphere that allows kids to support one another, take chances, and push themselves.
We are a large, urban population that reflects Chicago's vast diversity; At home, more than 80 different languages and dialects are spoken!
Many of my students are first generation immigrants. Most qualify for free or reduced lunch. Many class members live in communities that are racially, culturally and economically segregated. Their time at this diverse school offers each a hopeful opportunity to learn about and from one another. We have to make good use of our time together!
My fourth graders come in ready to learn, wanting to succeed, and curious about their world. Finding the right resources to tap into their thirst and keep them engaged is my mission. They provide the effort and determination. You can help provide the tools and resources that will inspire and bring hope to fruition!
My Project
A "Flexible Seating" classroom will help keep the blood flowing and the brains processing. I don't do well when asked to sit in a hard chair all day, and neither do my kids. Our "chair tipping" days will be over! This year, I plan to transform our work space.
Flexible seating will better meet the needs of our diverse learners: 30% of our class qualifies for Special Education services due to ADHD, Learning Disabilities, or Autism.
Flexible seating promotes a collaborative approach to teaching and learning. I know that the kids will love it!
Some of our existing tables will be raised to become "standing work spaces." Others will be lowered, and transform into "cushioned-seating" tables. Kids will love the Wobble stools. They bounce and flow, but don't tip. The stability balls will offer yet another option. The fruit cushions are sure to be a big hit too! Kids will grab a cushion and a clip board, and find a cozy nook in which to do group or focused individual work.
These 21st-century kids need a 21st-century classroom! The research is out; Flexible Seating is brain-friendly. We know that "one size fits all" is an outdated approach. We are ready to banish boredom, boost blood flow, and bid adieu to our chairs and desks. Your donation will help turn our classroom into a modern, student-centered workplace.
