I live in a town of around 6,500 people in South Dakota.

On average, our classroom size is around 20-25 students. Because we are a smaller school, our classrooms are economically diverse. However, the students have grown up together and get along great, despite their differences.

My Project

I start every year off by telling my students that I believe, with my whole heart, that I have the best students! I enjoy the challenge of meeting the diverse needs in my room and also boosting their confidence to succeed. Technology is wonderful and so motivating for the students. Literature Circles, small groups reading and discussing a novel, are a huge part of my classroom, and the students love them! Through experience, I have found the only students that do not enjoy them are the ones who struggle reading. This breaks my heart! Through peer buddy and teacher assistance, I can usually bring their confidence up, but I feel an iPad, to assist with reading aloud and defining unknown vocabulary, could boost that confidence at a quicker rate. When not in use for reading, I would like to use it for a math center. There are numerous free apps available that also serve as a learning tool. We are working with 21st century learners, and integrating technology is a must.

Reading is a life skill that will follow them forever, and I would like to make it a life skill that they enjoy as much or more than I do.

Whenever I have a student who dislikes reading at the start of the year, I take it upon myself, my own personal challenge, to change their view by the end of the year. So far, I've reached my goal many times. Your generous donations would help me reach my goal and change lives. If funded, this iPad will not sit idle for long! Thank you.
