Boomwhackers For Bullpups!

My students need 11 Boomwhacker Boomophone sets and Boomwhacker music books for continued music education.

I teach General Music to Kindergarten and first grade students. I am constantly finding ways to integrate the arts and academics, particularly reading and math skills. Our students are high-need with a large percentage of special education, free and reduced lunch students and minorities. (Our largest minority group are Native American students.) Over a third of the parents in our school district do not have a high school diploma. Our rural community is in an economically depressed area with high unemployment. Enrichment through Donor's Choose would vastly enrich and improve my students opportunities.

The need for my students is for rhythmic percussion instruments. Our classroom funding was dramatically cut this year by the state legislature, so purchasing instruments or other supplies is nearly impossible. We were fortunate just to be able to maintain arts instruction for our students.

I am requesting classroom sets of Bomwhackers and Boomwhacker music from Donors Choose. Boomwhackers are tuned percussion tubes. They are durable, lightweight, hollow plastic tubes, tuned to notes by length. They are multicolored and used as musical instruments in the percussion family. They produce musical tones when struck on nearly any surface, including the body. They can also be struck with mallets when arranged in formations like a xylophone. They promote physical activity and movement within the music classroom. Boomwhackers can be used to teach all three primary musical elements: rhythm, melody, and harmony. The different tones help children learn rhythms easily. Research indicates that students who study music and rhythms demonstrate improved math and abstract thinking skills.

With the help of Donors Choose, my students will enjoy music even more than they do now! Donors Choose can be a part of helping my students become 'tuned in and turned on' to become life-long learners. Their needs are great, but with your help, the opportunities can be even greater!
