This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Getting 8th graders to engage in a book, let alone love one, is my daily challenge. I strive to find novels that will capture their interests and keep it in order to teach the skills they need. Putting graphic novels in their hands gives me a chance to show them how enjoyable reading can be.

My students come from a variety of backgrounds, but our school is 70% free and reduced lunch, so we have a lot of students who come to school without privileges many of us take for granted.

They come without school supplies, books, and sometimes lack a lot of background knowledge or real life experiences that their middle class peers are equipped with. The students in my desks range from virtual non readers to avid readers, their interests are just as varied. We are a school-wide Title 1 building in the district and our funding allows for a lot of different programs and resources for our students. Yet that funding doesn't allow every request to be honored. Our school is filled with hard working teachers who spend hours preparing for classes, spend money out of their own pockets, and care passionately about our school and students. We have a challenging population and age group, and we love our students, school, and staff.

My Project

My vision for the graphic novels is that students will preview the titles, which are all science fiction or fantasy stories. They will rank their choices and I hope to honor their first or second choices. From there, we will read the graphic novels in small groups. Since graphic novels are best read independently, using the images and text to tell the story, students will read to certain stopping points to discuss. High level thinking questions, like Webb's Depth of Knowledge stems, will be used to foster a rich conversation about the texts. Genre study elements will also be noted by students in their reader's notebooks, and groups will write book reviews or another culminating activity when finished with the novels. Some project ideas may include creating their own dystopian city, writing a sequel or alternative ending, or taking images from the novel to expand on in writing. These novels are so engaging and level the playing field between readers, making the text accessible and fun.

Because of their artistic elements and color images, graphic novels are usually more pricey than a regular novel.

That often becomes a barrier to getting collections of these novels in classrooms. This donation to my classroom will improve student engagement and participation for starters! Boys and girls both love them, as well as reluctant and struggling readers; even accelerated readers love the way a graphic novel reads. This project will get teenagers reading books from cover to cover!
