My Students
Many of our students come from families who have lots of children, very limited resources and have been confined to the city limits. Sometimes our students are the first to attend college in their family. I want to make their experience in their school years the best it could be.
It brings such joy to watch my students grow up and fulfill their dreams; They are positive, funny and kind-they lift each other up and help to teach their teachers quite a bit about life as well.
My resilient and amazing students show up at school every day, regardless of what is happening at home and in their neighborhoods, to excel in science and history, to rejoice in friendships they are making and learn life long skills to enable them to "fly". My students are a group of hard-working, talented kids that are striving to live their best possible life and grow up to be successful and happy adults.
My Project
Our school has large budget constraints which limit the amount and quality of reading materials our students have access to. Our library consists of donated books which limits the exposure our students have to the outside world as well as the variety of topics that are presented to the students.
Our students need to become aware of cultures, health practices, art forms and history that extend beyond the city's confines.
One of the main priorities of educating these children is to show them what is outside their front door and beyond. I am hoping by obtaining this grant for a BookWorm Vending Machine stocked with various books that include more global issues, that will help expand their horizons and give them a sense of adventure. My students will have a renewed sense of excitement towards reading as well as control over their selections, by earning a gold token towards the book vending machine. My hopes are that they will use their opportunities to see the world and eventually change their world for the better. The renewed sense could help plant the seeds of curiosity for years of learning to come.
