This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Putting books away in my classroom has always been a SNAP, as there has always been a place to put them. My borrowed bookcase must be returned to its owner, as she is returning to the classroom. Where oh where shall we put our books when it is time to clean up?

We are a mid size K-5 public school in in the SF Bay Area.

I have 30 eager kindergarteners who always have something to say! My population covers all continents and at least a dozen languages. Instilling a love of books and reading in my students is critical to the success of my program. What we have in our classrooms is what we have. If we need to replace or supplement items in our classrooms, it must come out of our own pockets.

My Project

Not only is it crucial to instill a love of books and reading in my students (both reading independently and being able to sit and listen to a good book), it is also important to instill a bit responsibility in my students. I am trying to teach my students about proper book handling and etiquette too. By the end of kindergarten, it is my hope that my students will have a sense of the concepts of print, how to read a book, how to respond to a book and how to put a book away properly. Without a bookcase for my students to put their books on, I cannot make this final goal a reality.

School is over for the summer and my large collection of books are carefully categorized and put away.

My bookcase has been returned to its owner and there is a huge gap under the window where it has always sat full of books. Help me to have a place to unpack my books when school starts again in August!
