This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 6th-8th Grade Language Arts at a Chicago Public School. We use a Reading and Writing Workshop model in our classroom. Each day starts with a minilesson or shared reading, then students have time to read independently while I conference with groups. Students love to read and value that time.

Having the same students for three years helps build a strong classroom community and allows me to tailor units and activities to the specific students I teach.

Although my students vary greatly in their interests inside and outside of school, one thing that they all share is a deep commitment to helping each other and reaching their personal goals. Our school is dedicated to educating the whole student, focusing not only on the academic development, but also the social emotional growth of each student.

My Project

I have spent the past four years accumulating a large classroom library. One of my favorite things to do with students is sit down and find books that he or she is interested in reading. I have filled the library with high interest books at every level, so that all students can always find a book to read. We have held numerous reading competitions and reading book clubs in order to promote a greater amount of reading. Now that we have grown our library, we need a place to put all of our books so that students can access them easily. These bookshelves will allow us to create an organized and inviting space where students can search for new books.

Students currently spend time asking where certain books are.

Unfortunately, because of our lack of storage space students oftentimes need to search for the books they are looking to read. If we had the appropriate shelving in our classroom, it would allow students to find and read the books easily. In addition, having the books displayed would also increase the likelihood of students wanting to read a new book. These shelves will contribute to the overall feel of our class and promote reading.
