Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a 5th year teacher in one of the largest and most challenging school districts in the country. My students come from a high need and high poverty area where just getting to high school is an achievement. Many student end up in gangs, prisons, as early parents and without an academic future. However, I am pushing them for more. I am working with a fantastic group of Latino and African American American students who inspire me everyday with their perseverance and resiliency. They have the drive to attend college and pursue a career, but since their parents didn't even attend high school they don't know how to get there. I help my students develop the skills necessary to achieve.

To help them prepare for college for the last year I have stressed interactive notebooks in my classroom. This means each student keeps a three ring binder with sections for organizing their work for my class- Cornell Notes, Lab Activities, Opening Exercises, homework, etc. This has been a tremendous success! Students who repeated the class told me this year they felt more organized and prepared because of the use of the notebooks. They could find all of their work and develop their organizational skills. However-my problem comes with the storage of the notebooks. I ask students to keep them in class. Students don't have lockers or safe places at home to keep the notebooks. Also, having the notebooks stored in class allows me to better monitor their work and help those who are struggling. With over 200 notebooks, storage has become an issue. I tried to use old boxes decorated for storage. However, the size and shape didn't really work and the notebooks were scattered inside the boxes. This is where you come in.

Having two nice bookshelves in my classroom would allow students to be able to neatly organize, store and access their notebooks. I would be able to assign different shelves for each class so students work would stay safe and organized. Students would be able to feel a sense of pride in their work because it is stored neatly in a shelf like a book and not in a box.

Donors Choose is a wonderful program that has helped so many classrooms obtain materials that truly make a difference in the daily lives of students. Whether you are considering a first time donation or you've been here before, you really make a difference and have a major impact on teachers, students and learning. I thank you so much for considering my proposal and know that the bookshelves will be appreciated by many students for years to come.
