My Students
Every day I greet students with a hug and a smile at the door. We start off with "circle" time. Students are able to express their feelings in a circle. This technique helps with the social/emotional aspect of their lives. We engage in rich text that helps with reading, writing, and expressing ideas.
They are students who are products of generational poverty, but every day strive to do their best.
They are children who are always wanting more, and never allow their challenges to prevent them from learning and striving to be all that they can be. My scholars are very outspoken, and enjoy having their voices heard. I call them the "great debaters" because they would rather verbally complete tasks with groups versus independent practices on a worksheet. They all enjoy hands-on learning. They love for their work to be displayed around the school or on bulletin boards. Our school is such a family-oriented environment. Every staff member takes responsibility for each child's well being. It is never "my students"; it is always "our students".
My Project
My students are in need of another front facing bookshelf. I am still in complete awe of how much my students love to read. One little boy in particular sticks out in my mind. I remember vividly in August that he actually cried when we started to work on stamina through reading. This same little boy now requests for me to read a list of books weekly and he has a book in his hand everywhere he goes.
Our front facing bookshelf that we received a few months ago has been life changing.
My students have such easy access to the texts they need. We recently received funding for my diverse books to place in our classroom. They will arrive soon and we can't wait to have a classroom "book tasting" to introduce these new reads into our classroom. I want to display these diverse reads in a magical way.
The front facing bookshelf would be the solution to displaying these beautiful covers. My scholars are so excited to learn about their culture as well as other cultures. Having another front facing bookshelf in our classroom will allow each child to easily read and access these texts.
