It's so important for students to have access to books that they can relate to. If students can find themselves in the characters, settings, and story lines of the books they read, not only does it support their reading and literacy skills, it bolsters their sense of self and identity.
Students need access to books that provide them with "windows and mirrors" - the opportunity to see how others live, and to see themselves in the pages as well.
