Books: Windows and Mirrors

Help me give my students new books. Some of these are replacements for well-loved stories and others are simply student requests. I've included books both in English and Spanish to help make sure there are books for everyone.

My Students

All of my students are amazing. They are curious and kind and engaged. They make me laugh every single day, and I love getting to know them and all of the things that they love. For me, the best part of teaching is spending time with my students and learning about the things they enjoy.

Many of my students come from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds which means that my classroom feels like a global hub.

There are many different languages spoken along with and sometimes intertwined with English. I love learning from my students about their cultures and language as we work together.

My Project

At my school, we've worked really hard to cultivate a culture of reading. Every English class begins with individual reading time, we hold monthly book clubs, and we've even purchased high-engagement books for other teachers in other content areas in our school. We are working so hard to make reading a part of every day.

When the pandemic hit, I didn't realize I wouldn't see my kids again.

On the last days of in-person learning in 2020 I sent home as many of my classroom books as I could. I thought that we were going to be out of the classroom for a few weeks, and I really wanted to make sure that my students had access to books while we were gone. Unfortunately, we didn't come back to school, and recovering those classroom books didn't really happen. A few made their way back to me, but for the most part, they disappeared from my shelves.

I've worked in the last two years to use my legislative funds to replace those books while also trying to purchase new books for my students. If a student wants a particular book, I try to buy it for them even if that means I'm sometimes using my own money to do it. Especially since many of my students are looking for popular books in Spanish and our library's Spanish section is quite small.

I believe that books provide an escape: worlds to get lost in, mirrors to our own lives, and windows into the lives of others. They are a fantastic tool for empathy. The act of reading is always an act of empathy, an imagining of what it is to be someone else. These books will give my students access to reading and fulfill requests they've made for books they want!
