Help me give my students books to keep their minds active and comforted during remote learning and beyond. Books will be handed out individually based on interest for students to keep.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work on the southwest side of Chicago, where remote learning has been difficult. Since we left school in quite a hurry, with a lot of uncertainty, my students only took their personal belongings home. Many of my students are not equipped properly to engage through technology. A handful of my students have been hit personally with Covid-19 and are dealing with many emotions and also lack of funds. My school has been generous to create fundraisers for groceries and basic necessities. I would like to raise money to supply books to my students. Books have always been a form of escape for me. I would like to provide my students individually with a high interest book. These books will allow my students to not only engage and maintain their reading skills for my class, but these books will be a source of escapism, possibly comfort to them. I hope a simple gift of a book to each student will bring joy and hope during this time while I continue to encourage their love of reading, even from afar.
My Project
These books have been individually selected to fit the needs and interests for each student. During remote learning, it has been difficult to reach out to my students on an individual level. Books play a major role in our classroom and I do not want my students to lose any reading time while at home. I hope each book will be a happy surprise and serve as joy and comfort during these uncertain times when they see each book was selected and delivered just for them. The books will also keep my students engaged in the reading skills we would be doing in the classroom at this time.
