Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come into our classroom smiling every morning. For many of them kindergarten is their first experience with school and they would attend three hundred and sixty-five days a year if they could! They are like sponges soaking up everything.

I like to think that we teach the whole child at our school.

It's not just about the reading and writing, but inspiring the next Van Gogh or Galileo. We incorporate lots of hands-on activities so they can apply what they are learning in different ways. We have over 90% of our students who qualify for free/reduced lunch, which means their families live below the poverty level. I want to make sure they are growing in every area of their lives.

My Project

With everything going on in the world today, I want to make sure my students are empowered to make a difference in society. I want to shower them with books that foster peace and creativity. I want them to find role models that look like them, that come from homes like theirs.

I chose stories about people like Alice Roosevelt, Basquiat, Josephine Baker and Ruth Bader Ginsberg to give my students role models that will inspire them.

I plan to use these stories as read-alouds in units of study for our class and also to enrich our social studies lessons. The students love to check books out from class and take them home to share with their families.

I am hoping to spark an interest in my students in spreading peace and contributing to our society. Who knows, with your help maybe someday one or two will run for political office-or even become a President themselves!
