Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come into our classroom smiling every morning. For many of them kindergarten is their first experience with school and they would attend three hundred and sixty-five days a year if they could! They are like sponges soaking up everything.

I like to think that we teach the whole child at our school.

It's not just about the reading and writing, but inspiring the next Van Gogh or Galileo. We incorporate lots of hands-on activities so they can apply what they are learning in different ways. We have over 90% of our students who qualify for free/reduced lunch, which means their families live below the poverty level. I want to make sure they are growing in every area of their lives.

My Project

Roger Ebert said "Ï believe empathy is the most essential quality to civilization". In this world where people rarely look up from their phones and spend so much time posting selfies we have lost the ability to make basic connections with each other. I work very hard to teach my students the basics-how to read, write and add but I also think it's my responsibility to help them develop skills when it comes to empathy.

Imagining yourself in another's shoes is not an easy skill for little ones.

They have just started to experience the world and in Kindergarten they are often experiencing things for the first time. I would use these books to help the students develop the ability to see things from another's perspective. To feel what the characters are feeling and translate that into their daily relationships with their peers and their families. Literature is a great way provoke the ability to think from multiple perspectives.
