Books To Promote Diverse Representation

My Project

Our school's library book collection does not adequately support the needs of the students at our school. A diversity analysis of our collection reveals that we only have 162 titles about LatinX/Hispanic people, 375 titles about African Americans, and 112 about Asian Americans. Meanwhile, our population consists of 447 LatinX/Hispanic students, 421 African American students, and 997 Asian students. Furthermore, 46% of our books are considered "aged titles" and are often seen by the students as old and outdated.

Our students need to see themselves positively reflected and represented in our library book collection in order to feel valued and welcome in the media center.

Hopefully, by incorporating a collection that includes positive and non stereotypical representations of characters and authors from a variety of racial/cultural backgrounds, we will create an inviting environment that helps students feel respected and comfortable. These books will be prominently displayed throughout the media center, so students will see them when they enter the room. Furthermore, by incorporating new books, students will view our collection as relevant and appealing instead of boring, dated, and unappealing. Our hope is that exposing students and faculty to these books will encourage an environment of respect, acceptance, and compassion and inspire a new love for reading in some students.
