Books to Movie: Hidden Figures; A Learning Experience
We need 35 copies of the book, "Hidden Figures" to encourage and develop the students' literacy, and help them learn how they can achieve what they want with minimal materials.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Rowe's classroom raised $437
This project is fully funded
About My Students
I work in a New York City Title I middle school where every student receives free lunch. It is a great school where some students travel from far away just to be able to attend. Most of my students are English Language Learners. They are really great kids who love to learn.
Anna, Camilla, and Linda are the students who wanted to spearhead this project. Excited about the prospects of seeing the movie, Hidden Figures, they showed interest in acquiring copies of the book to prepare the class for the narrative in the movie.
The ladies split the class into 8 groups where they brainstormed the best way to convey their needs for this project.
Women are historically underrepresented in careers in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology. Hidden Figures is a factual account of female mathematicians defying the odds and succeeding in those fields. Introducing my students to women who they can identify with will enable them to become more confident in their scientific and mathematical abilities, as well as inspire them to seek careers requiring strong mathematical backgrounds.
The leaders of this project have experienced social injustices and biases. Delving into the book will start the dialogue in my classroom, breaking down the barriers and smashing misconceptions about stereotypical inferiorities.
Additionally, after integrating the book into the ELA curriculum, the students will be introduced to some of the mathematical calculations used by the great "human computers" of NASA. With the help of the NASA "Hidden Figures ToolKit," the students will apply their knowledge of geometry and algebra to solve real world mathematical problems.
In Their Own Words
Our goal is to help our classmates learn about the STEM field and some of the possibilities available to them. The book, "Hidden Figures" will help our class's literacy and help them think about their future careers.
We will be doing a unit of study centered around the book in our English, Mathematics, and Social Studies classrooms. First we will take part in activities that will enhance our English language skills. We will be able to investigate the the author's narrative as we look into her organization, dialogue, and literary techniques. Second, in our math class we will participate in projects geared around Space Math. Finally, in Social Studies, we will get a chance to discuss the social environment at the time the characters in the book created history.
After reading the book, we plan to lead discussions with the class as we make note about how African American women, in times of racism and segregation, were able to help America achieve its goal of landing on the moon.
We will encourage girls in our classroom to work hard and make them understand that they are equal to boys. We will also show girls that we have the same power as boys, and maybe even more. We are strong -not just in strength, but in wisdom too.
This project is important to us because these books can be a model for students to plan for their future. The students can learn from this group of women and see that they can make anything happen all while improving their reading and literary skills.
We also feel that this project will help the class learn that even the lowest people can do big things when they put their minds to it. This will encourage our class to work harder on our grades to make a better tomorrow. By getting these books, our class can begin to focus on our future.
