This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In first grade, we are learning a lot about simple sight words, phonics skills (such as letter sounds, blends, digraphs, and being able to put those sounds together to create words), vocabulary, comprehension (what is happening in a story), and so much more! The curriculum offers many paper passages to help students practice these skills, however we do not have a lot of books to read and use to practice these skills. Having books for students to practice their reading skills is so important, because they learn that reading goes beyond printed passages...reading can be found anywhere!

My project is seeking books for students to practice reading during the school day, as well as a book label printer and label stickers.

The books I have listed in this project are Many Color Days, which will be used to help teach students about colors and emotions, Gerald and Piggie books which will be used to help students practice simple sight words they are learning in class, The Mitten which will be a great book to introduce students to folktales from other countries, Wonkey Donkey and Silly Sally which will be used for students to practice all decoding skills and sight words recognition, and seasons books titled Winter Is, Summer Is, and Fall is to teach students about the different seasons during science time. I also have a Hungry Caterpillar plushy listed for students to have when we learn about characters in stories. My project also has a label printer listed, and label stickers so we can organize these books. I would love students to be able to "check out" the books so they can also take them home to practice!
