Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Open the door to a brighter future for my students by giving them access to a variety of interesting books at their independent reading levels. Help them discover that reading is not only vital to success in life but also enjoyable!

My students are several years behind grade level in reading and have had mostly negative experiences with it because of their struggles.

Because of this, most of them do not enjoy reading and do not understand the importance of reading and how reading well will aid them in succeeding in their futures. My school is located in a low-income neighborhood in the city of Chicago and there is not enough money available to expand my classroom library.

My Project

Adding high-interest/low-level reading materials to our classroom library will provide my students with materials they are able to read without frustration and that are written on topics which appeal to them. We have at least 20 minutes of independent reading time every day. During this time, students work on developing their reading stamina and using strategies like questioning, visualizing, and making connections and predictions to become better readers. Also, students are allowed to choose the books they read during this time so it also shows them that reading is a form of enjoyment. After reading every day, students reflect on their reading in a composition notebook using meta-cognitive stems. Then, they share their reading experiences with other students in the class.

I am hoping these books will foster a love of reading in my students and encourage them to read more often.

One good book could change the way a student feels about reading. Please help make it possible for my students to discover that reading is enjoyable and thereby increase their reading proficiency.
