Help me give my students books that will teach them new ideas, let them explore new worlds, challenge them to see from new perspectives, and comfort them in the trying times of this pandemic.

My Project

Imagine a class full of pre-teen children reading, writing, asking questions, discussing ideas with their peers, and expressing an eagerness to make up for the educational time that they missed out on during the difficult times we all faced due to the pandemic. The students you are imagining come from incredibly diverse households with regards to ethnicity, culture, and religion. However, the vast majority of these students come from low-income homes, not to mention the additional troubled familial situations that many students also face. This means that these students are actually displaying incredible resiliency by waking up and coming to school to grow and learn everyday. These are my bright students who have endless potential.

I hope that my classroom can be at least one stable place in my students' lives where they can feel safe growing socially, emotionally, and academically.

One way that I can work towards making this more of a reality is by designing and developing a classroom environment where students feel encouraged to explore their interests and engage comfortably with academic pursuits like reading. The books purchased through this project will help me greatly in creating the classroom environment that I envision. I can see my students perusing bookshelves, and their faces brightening as they find books that match their interests or ignite new passions within them. They deserve the resources that will help them meet their potential.
