Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from families that have not valued reading at home, so they have not learned to love literature. Hopefully exposing them to these books will be a small step to changing this attitude.

We have around 400 eighth graders at our school.

Our community has a low income, high minority population. Most students go home to either a empty house or go home and are the caregiver of younger siblings and cousins. When they have a book that is new in there hands, they are excited and more likely to read it because it seems special.

My Project

We plan on having a half hour dedicated two days a week to literature circles where the students actively read and discuss the stories with their peers. We hope this will increase not only test scores, but their love of reading. It will also develop their communication skills.

What is more important than putting a book in a child's hands.

If we want a true community of learners, then we need to supply with the tools they need. Once we get them talking about books and hearing their peers share what they have read and enjoyed, they may be more likely to pick up another book.
