This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are bright, curious middle schoolers, most of whom are English Language Learners (ELLs). Our classroom is a beautiful tapestry of experiences, identities, and stories. Our library should reflect that.
This project aims to diversify our classroom library with books written by authors of various cultural backgrounds, featuring characters and experiences that mirror the lives of my students, as well as offer windows into the lives of others.
Representation matters. When students see themselves in the stories they read, it builds confidence, fosters empathy, and deepens their love of learning.
Reading stories from a variety of voices allows students to explore identity, build cultural awareness, and develop a strong sense of belonging. It also supports language development in meaningful, authentic ways. These books will support our ELL students (and all students) as they build a relationship with reading through stories that resonate with their own experiences or open their eyes to others.
