Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are highly motivated and passionate about the health field. They enjoy working with their hands and raising awareness of health conditions. Many students are also part of a health community service club - HOSA, that I also advise. They often volunteer their time and labor to assist with various health-related walks/marathons throughout the year and at the local nursing home/elderly hall. The students are eager to learn more about the human body and put into practice the skills and knowledge they have gained in the classroom.

My students are future health professionals.

They are primarily Filipino and many come from an immigrant background. The students also face financial challenges. As a teacher at a Title I school, I have seen my students have to choose between some experiences because of financial hardship. I wish to provide experiences within my classroom that will help them to achieve their goals and gain skills that they will need for their future careers.

My Project

HOSA - Future Health Professionals is an extra-curricular club that helps students to participate in community service, further their knowledge and skills in health careers and showcase their knowledge in local and national competitions. The students in the club are often in my classes and apply their knowledge gained in HOSA competitions to their everyday classes. The experience of competing is a unique one that allows students to be judged by industry professionals. Students often feel more confident in their skills after competition and continue in the field with a greater sense of purpose.

My students are passionate about health careers.

Often times I have purchased textbooks out my own money to help fuel the interests of my students and I have come to the point where I am unable to keep up with the myriad of topics that they are interested in.

In the past, students have chose topics that helped them to explore different career paths in the medical field such as: veterinary science, clinical nursing, pharmacology, public health, forensics and sports medicine. The students often remark how the experience of competing has changed their outlook. They often attend leadership workshops, guest speakers and make connections with other schools at competition. But the first component of competition is gathering materials to become prepared. The books will serve as a starting point to meet student interest and make it possible for them to compete.
