This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Teach the children well and let them lead the way," this line is from Greatest Love of All, by Michael Masser and Linda Creed. I firmly believe what the song says. We must teach the children well as they are the future of this country and we will need to depend on them to lead the way into a bright future.
My students come from very diverse backgrounds.
They also have diverse ability levels. We are in a large school district that has been severely hit by budget cuts. We have very few supplies and there is definitely no money to be spent on "extras". My class is full of curious students who love to learn through hands-on lessons. They are bright and enjoy learning. They need exposure to lessons that cannot be taught using just the materials supplied by our district.
My Project
I strive to provide a well-balanced library in my classroom. I look for books that address different topics and are multi-cultural and diverse. Having access to a wide assortment of books encourages my students to read and enjoy it.
I want my students to know that they and their races and cultures are important but I also want them to learn about races and cultures other than their own.
These books will help provide more diversity to my classroom library. Many of them will also be used as read a louds in class which will encourage important discussions about race and culture.
