Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 2nd grade and my students are diverse from low economic homes. I currently teach a busy group of 20 second grade students. The majority of my children are far below grade level. These children come to school every day with very diverse needs. As their teacher and caregiver, it is my goal to ensure that my students are the most successful that they can be. In my room, we constantly look towards to future by considering ourselves the Penn State Class of 2033. Every little bit that you fund, a child gets closer to that goal.

My Project

Books are the foundation of an amazing education. I have grown up absolutely loving books and I would like to put the same love for reading in the minds of my students. What do students need to love reading? BOOKS!

While my classroom library is not small by any means, it really needs some revamping to fit the demographic of my students.

The majority of my books were written for middle class white children. The characters do not reflect my students. I have added many diverse picture books to this project so that my students can see themselves within their reading.

I have also found that students within my school community have a difficult time expressing and understanding their emotions. Because of this, I have included picture books that deal with grief, sadness, and anger so that students can relate to the text they are reading.

Something that my library is seriously lacking is books written in Spanish. About half of my class is ESL (English as a Second Language), with 2 of my students speaking almost no English. I want my students to enjoy reading in their home language as they expand their English skills.

Overall, I would love to provide my students with interesting texts that reflect their lives.
