Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
It was William Styron who said, "A great book should leave you with many experiences, and slightly exhausted at the end. You live several lives while reading.” My students have a big appetite for new experiences and these memoirs can give them that.
My students are ambitious juniors working towards one common goal: a college education.
All my students represent minorities and are living below the poverty line. Most will be first generation college students and while they are very excited for the opportunity, they take that responsibility very seriously. They are very grateful for their education and the opportunity they have to learn and work daily to accomplish their goals
My Project
The four memoirs I am requesting will supplement my students' study of the Holocaust novel--Night by Elie Wiesel, and the genre of memoir. These memoirs, including Survival in Auschwitz, The Sunflower, Man's Search for Meaning, and This Way for the Gas Ladies and Gentlemen, will help broaden their understanding by allowing them to experience numerous survivor accounts instead of limiting them to only Wiesel's book. The memoirs will strengthen their analytical and argumentative writing skills through a compare and contrast essay of the survivors' memoirs. Their interest and desire to learn more about the Holocaust and its survivors is evident and I hope to build that interest and their critical thinking skills with these new books.
As a small and new charter school, we do not have many of the resources that large public schools do.
Our school does not have a student library and few students can afford to buy numerous books. If I can build a library for my students, they will be able to read, learn, and grow as every child deserves.
