Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are hesitant to be exposed to unfamiliar things, but when they do -- the excitement begins! My students are ready to break out of their everyday lives and into the world of Middle Earth.
Our school is low income, and thus many do not own books at home.
The excitement of reading is overshadowed by so many things in front of them. Many of our students find reading to be boring and cumbersome, they are used to the fast paced, short attention of the Internet and TV. They are good kids, but just need to be exposed to more than what is in front of their faces.
My Project
By entering the world of Middle Earth, through reading as a group, the students will be supported in the excitement of The Hobbit. After immersing themselves in the world, through art, riddles, and discussions, the students will be ready to hold their reading night with younger children. They will share some of their favorite passages and help the children envision with original art and sharing other resources.
By empowering the students to be the readers and leading the children, they will see that reading can be exciting, it can spark an imagination.
Through artwork, it will become obvious that the imaginations are becoming stretched and interpreted different ways. Most of all, by putting the students in the roles of leaders, they will become the leaders and self-motivated students that become successful in life.
