My Students

As a second grade teacher in an urban school, my students come from a variety of backgrounds. No matter what their background is, they are all a curious bunch of children who are striving to make the world a better place. We are an International Baccalaureate school that focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer in the classroom and beyond.

They like to move, they are 21st century learners, and they love a lot of positive attention.

From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I hope to inspire them to continue on a path of academic excellence that focuses on their individual needs.

My Project

My students love to read! Over the past several years I have been fortunate to have students who have introduced me to new books and series that I've enjoyed. What I've noticed in my class library was that I needed to add books for my advanced readers. I have also wanted to start a book club with small groups of students who are interested in going on an adventure through these amazing books.

Kids become independent readers at their own pace.

Some students are still sounding out words while others are flying through different chapter books. I believe that students should be given the opportunity to read what they are interested in. Of course their reading level does need to come into account but for some advanced readers it's sometimes challenging to find age appropriate text that they can enjoy. Luckily there are many books out there that fit the bill.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret, The CandyMakers, and Escape From Mr. Lemoncello's Library are just a few examples of books that incorporate mystery, adventure, and humor for children at the elementary level. I can't wait to hear the student discussions and see the faces as we read through these amazing books together.
