My students need these sparkling, high interest novels for academic and personal growth. Our titles include The Hate U Give, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian and Speak.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our urban students are hungry for books they can really get into.
These kids are such hard workers if provided opportunity and direction.
Most are first generation in the US and first generation to attend college. 80 percent of our community of learners qualify for free or reduced lunch. They are finding their way socially and academically.
Their parents are the housecleaners, the taxi drivers, the dishwashers in our society, working several jobs to open doors for their fiercely loved children. Our dynamic school and teachers give them this access.
My Project
It's teacher's dream. My students burst into my classroom and say, "Miss, can't we just read today?" This is what WILL happen if we obtain classroom sets of these high interest books. We need class sets of these sparkling, high interest novels for academic and personal growth. Our titles include The Hate U Give, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian and Speak.
Teenage issues of binge drinking, depression, addiction, academic struggles, dating, parent relationships, discrimination and self discovery: all of these topics keep my students mesmerized and turning the pages.
We build literacy through independent reading; teens then participate in thoughtful, student-led discussions and ultimately write academic and narrative pieces, all the while coached me, their teacher.
Students strengthen college readiness skills, social currency and self awareness in my classroom. These novels are essential tools to make this happen.
