I teach at a Title I elementary school. My students are diverse, enthusiastic, and brilliant! Each year I get to work with 28 kindergarten students who all come from very different places in the world.
My students come from a wide variety of cultures and languages.
We have over 41 languages spoken in my school! I teach many English as a second language. My goal is to make reading a pleasurable experience. I want my students to look at books and see a window into another world. I also want them to see books as a mirror, a picture of what it is like in the world they come from and live in.
My Project
My class needs books that show all types of cultures, skin tones, and lifestyles. They need to see books with children that look like them! I am looking for a solid start to a multicultural library, which will act as a window and mirror into the lives of people of color!
We have an obligation to show students how amazing they are and how amazing their families are!
These books will give my students confidence to tell their story. These books will let them know that they BELONG at school. These books will broaden the understanding that we need to change how we think about race and power. Please help us get books that can educate the kids who are learning during this historical time.
