This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach an amazing group of bilingual 4th graders who come from beautifully diverse cultural backgrounds. My goal is to build a classroom library where every child can see themselves represented in the books they read.

Right now, many of our books don’t reflect the identities, languages, or traditions of the children in my classroom.

I want to change that by adding powerful stories that celebrate Hispanic, Black, Filipino, Indigenous, and other underrepresented voices.

This project includes titles like Efrén Divided, Areli Is a Dreamer, Paletero Man, Islandborn, Fry Bread, and Filipino Celebrations. These books reflect real lives, real cultures, and real feelings—stories that will help my students feel seen, valued, and inspired.

I’ve also included wall-mounted bookshelves to proudly display these books and give learners easy access to them. While I wish I could purchase them all myself, I simply can’t afford to give my students this level of representation without support.
