This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come to school with smiles on their faces and are eager to learn. I teach at a Title I school in Los Angeles, California where most are living below the poverty line. My students are English language learners that enjoy coming to school because it is a safe place for them to make friends, learn and build their confidence. Although my students experience many obstacles, they strive to become life long learners.
My Project
My library needs more books that reflect my student population. Creating a diverse library will teach my students the importance of their own culture as well as others. Furthermore, they will feel represented and valued. Every student deserves to see themselves in literature and be able to relate to the main characters. When students relate to the main character students they begin to engage and have deeper discussions that strengthen reading comprehension.
These books will empower students to create relationships with others no matter their background.
Culturally relevant books help to engage all readers because they build on the lived experiences of students. Culturally relevant books will help students learn from one another and realize that their culture is respected and therefore they will learn to respect others. Literature will bring students together to learn more about the world and others and realize we are all important in this world.
