Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are highly motivated and passionate about the health field. They enjoy working with their hands and raising awareness of health conditions. Many students are also part of a health community service club - HOSA, that I also advise. They often volunteer their time and labor to assist with various health-related walks/marathons throughout the year and at the local nursing home/elderly hall. The students are eager to learn more about the human body and put into practice the skills and knowledge they have gained in the classroom.

My students are future health professionals.

They are primarily Filipino and many come from an immigrant background. The students also face financial challenges. As a teacher at a Title I school, I have seen my students have to choose between some experiences because of financial hardship. I wish to provide experiences within my classroom that will help them to achieve their goals and gain skills that they will need for their future careers.

My Project

Books often give us insight into a world that we have never been in. The books I have chosen serve a dual purpose. They will be used for HOSA competition but they are also going to be used in study groups to help students gain insight into the medical field.

The books cover a wide variety of topics and themes in the health field.

The Poisoner's Handbook details forensic science crimes and is a page turner for any student looking into the field of crime scene investigation. "What Patients Say, What Doctor's Hear" details how important communication can be in the health field and how empathy and respect can impact patient outcomes. "Chasing My Cure" details a doctor's memoir on the topics of death, hope, and resilience. There is even a book on teen leadership and one on illness. I hope that these books will put into light the empathy, deeper connections, interesting stories and unusual cases that my students will encounter through their careers.

I am also asking for a bag-valve mask to help with my students competing in the category of CPR. They need to have one in their kit to practice with and demonstrate their skills at competition. They also hope to use it throughout the year, along with our manikins, to teach CPR to others.
