My Students
I teach in an urban setting. Please support 36 bright young minds learning in a Dual Immersion setting, learning to read, write, and communicate intellectually and socially in English and Spanish. Seventy-four percent of our student population are language learners and over 50% are considered low-income and receive free or reduced-price lunch. In a time where rhetoric used is offensive, abusive, and combative, I believe it is even more important to have books that model and teach the opposite. My dream is to have a year where every student I teach sees in all our books that they matter, their families matter, and there is no one “right” or “ideal” way to exist in our country. I want to do my part to improve and reflect. Thank you for your support.
My Project
This project is designed to both acknowledge and disrupt current messages to students that they aren't welcome in our country. I am working specifically to have books that represent and actively defy hate speech.
These books were chosen to support and represent my own reflecting on how I can do better to read more books year round with characters and messages that show every child is welcome, important, and valuable in our classroom.
With these books students in my classroom, students will be inspired to write their own stories that represent them and their families. They will feel empowered and meaningful not just because I say they are, but because they will see themselves in the important books we read. The students will see each other in meaningful ways, working to disrupt and change the lives of all the students in my class.
