This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In my elementary school sounseling office, I strive to nurture kind, empathetic, and emotionally aware individuals. This project will bring together the power of literacy and social-emotional learning (SEL) to help students better understand themselves and others.

With your support, I will provide students with a carefully selected collection of SEL-themed books that explore emotions, relationships, resilience, and self-awareness.

These stories will serve as springboards for meaningful conversations and reflective activities that build emotional intelligence.

To deepen their learning, students will use folders to create personal SEL journals where they can respond to prompts, reflect on characters’ experiences, and make connections to their own lives. Crayons will allow them to express their feelings and ideas creatively through drawings, emotion maps, and story illustrations.

Each book will be read aloud and followed by guided discussions and hands-on activities that reinforce key SEL competencies such as empathy, self-regulation, and responsible decision-making. These materials will help create a safe, supportive space where every child feels seen, heard, and valued.

By integrating literacy with SEL, this project will empower students to grow not just as readers, but as compassionate and confident individuals ready to thrive in and out of the classroom.
