This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I currently have a group of 20 fabulous second graders in a dual language classroom. They live in a low income, high poverty stricken inner city community in northern New Jersey. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom due to their socioeconomic status and their varying linguistic abilities. Despite this, they all come to school every day ready, willing and excited to learn! They tackle challenges and strive to do their best. They are resilient, respectful, and hardworking students.

My Project

All of my students are English Language Learners. Some have been here for a year or so and some have been here for just a few months. They are so eager to learn and show of their language skills on a daily basis. Having a variety of nonfiction texts and reading games will make learning English Fun. We would also like some totes so that the students can be able to carry books home so that they can continue to practice reading skills with their family at home. Many students do not have access to books in English at home, so being able to take one home would be invaluable for their continued growth.

Reading books, Totes for carrying books, and reading games are engaging for students as they are learning, practicing, and reinforcing reading and language concepts learned in class.

My eager students are absorbing so much in such a short time, that I think these resources will make a great impact in their reading and language skills.
