Books Part 2 : Learning About Animal Adaptations with Penguins
My students need 13 copies each of the books, Penguin Chick, and the March of the Penguins - Official Children's Book, so they can research information for their penguin PowerPoint or multimedia presentations.
I teach twenty-five happy and excited-to-learn third graders, and all day long they have fun growing, thinking, and trying their best. Our school is a wonderful, small multicultural school located in Los Angeles. Many of the students at our school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and everyone receives free breakfast.
My students love using technology with our academic studies.
We will begin our Animal Adaptations unit soon and my students will be creating PowerPoints or another multimedia presentation on a specific penguin that they select to research. They will also watch portions of the movie, March of the Penguins.
My Project
This project will ensure that every student in my class will have the necessary books to do research on penguin adaptations. I have requested 13 copies of the book, Penguin Chick. This story was in our language arts book last year and my students loved learning the details about the life of an emperor penguin chick. We have a new language arts program this year, so we are unable to read this story without having the books in our classroom. I have also requested 13 copies of the book, The March of the Penguins - Official Children's Book so we can follow-up on what we learn from portions of the movie to what we read in the book.
Learning about animal adaptations, with a focus on penguins, is a great way for my students to integrate their science curriculum with our language arts curriculum.
Our new language arts program spends three weeks reading informational text passages about animal adaptations, so having the books I have requested will be a great way to tie-in all of our learning with non-fiction books for our classroom library.
Teaching third graders to compare and contrast information that they have learned from different resources is a great skill. These books contain lots of information that is easily read by third graders.
The culminating project for our penguin unit is to create a PowerPoint or multimedia presentation. My students are currently learning how to create PowerPoint presentations of their favorites poems, and how to present the information to our class, so working on a new PowerPoint will be the next step in their development of technology skills.
Your help donating to this project means that our class, and the other third grade class at our school, will have the classroom resources they need.
