I teach some incredible kiddos. They come from a variety of backgrounds. Our school is very low in literacy. My greatest desire is to instill in them a love of reading and learning. These kiddos were out of school for some of the most important months of their Kindergarten year due to Covid-19. This has left them far behind in all of their subject areas but most importantly reading.
Many of my students are language impoverished.
One great need is getting books into their homes for them to read. So many times, my kiddos tell me that they don't have books in their home for them to read.
My Project
I have 30 students in my class who are beginning readers. They come from a variety of home situations. Our school is designated at low income. One of the greatest challenges of the Covid pandemic is the loss of learning that these kiddos have experienced. Half of my class began the year reading at a Kindergarten level. With a large class of kiddos with a variety of behavior and attention struggles, finding time to read with each of them is difficult.
The books in this project will be part of my classroom Take-Home Reading Library.
Our school library and our school take-home reading library are not allowing students to take home books to read due to Covid. I need my students to spend time each night reading books at their reading level that they are interested in to help them become proficient at reading. I also want them to develop a love of learning.
I am also including some books to help with their social/emotional development. I have found that many of my kiddos are behind is this area. Having books to read that target these areas will be a great asset to our classroom library.
