Books Open New Doors

Help me give my students books for our library that represent our diverse world. Ada Twist, Scientist is one book my students have been asking for because many are interest in STEM.

My Students

My students are curious and enthusiastic learners who devour books. So many children tell me library is their favorite part of school. These students come from homes where they do not have a lot of books and depend on our school library. Last year our library was closed and much of their reading took place on electronic devices.

Coming back to library was such a treat this year, students were finally able to hold a book in their hands and turn the pages.

Older students are enthusiastically asking for the next book in a series and some of my younger students are picking up books for the first time! The joy on their faces when they find just what they’re looking for is priceless!

My Project

Students see themselves in books. These books teach compassion and empathy while celebrating diversity. Students may check them out and bring them home opening up conversations with their families. As the Librarian I will use these as close read alouds in the library and teachers will also have access to the books.

Books can provide a new perspective to the reader opening their hearts and minds.

It’s so important that students learn to appreciate and celebrate their classmate’s differences. Reading books with diverse characters help us all see how alike we really are.
