Help me give my students books that are on their level. At this time my students are not reading and are learning letters and learning the sounds and we do not have books to support their learning.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a kindergarten special education teacher in a 12:1 self-contained Title I school in the Bronx. The children in my classroom have different levels of academic, communication, social, and independent functioning skills. They are all very special and they each have their own strengths as well as areas that present more difficulty for them. My students are able to learn many of the same things as students in the general education classroom setting, but they simply require specialized instructional strategies, repetition of information, sensory-based activities, assistance in communicating, etc. I love teaching them because every day is different.
My Project
My students are still in the process of learning how to identify the letters of the alphabet and their corresponding sounds. Unfortunately, we do not have any books in our classroom to support their learning. Currently, the books we have in our classroom are for children that are already reading. It is very difficult to teach children to respect books and use them properly if they do not have books to support their level. It is important to receive these books in order to teach my students the importance of how to use books properly while making sure they are leveled appropriately.
