This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are inquisitive little scholars with a variety of needs. They all reside in a public housing sector of Chicago and face daily challenges outside of school. I want to make their educational experience as warm and inviting as their little hearts. We need the resources to keep them up to date with the digital world.
"If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow." - Dewey
My students are in grades Kindergarten through second and love to learn what lies outside their community. Many do not get to see or venture past the city limits and need exposure to people, places, and opportunities.
My Project
I would love to build my classroom library with new books on CD. My primary scholars are just beginning to develop their reading skills and need many opportunities to be exposed to stories. Having a listening center with individual compact disc players and a go to digital library can foster a love of independent reading with confidence.
Reading should not be presented to children as a chore or duty; it should be offered to them as a precious gift.
I think if I had the opportunities to self select stories on tape (back in my day), reading would have not been such a daunting task. I have seen the benefits of offering student choice in the classroom. Students are more willing to take ownership in their work and progress. Please help me provide a lively listening center with a variety of books on CD. My students would be forever grateful. Thank you.
