Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from various social economic backgrounds. They range from low income families to homes where parents are trying their best to raise their children in a neighborhood that has gang related problems daily. There are students that don't have either parent and are either with a foster family or with a relative. Either way, they come to class eager to learn, which is why I wouldn't want anything more but to enhance their excitement for education through games and materials.

My Project

The resources I chose for my students are a set of specially selected read aloud books to be used to introduce or review a specific subject matter. By having these new resources, I will be able to provide my students with books that are ideal for both a read aloud or independent reading. The series "Dogman" is perfect for my reluctant learners. I don't have this in my classroom library and my students have been asking relentlessly to add. Read aloud books like "Unplugged” and “The Lotus Seed”

are important for older students as well because they will be exposed to rich vocabulary that these specific books provide.

The impact that you will have on my students is vital. I am also asking for teacher guides for reading and writing called “Words Their Way” and the “Literacy Continuum” by Fountas and Pinnell. Currently, I am sharing these teacher guides with the entire staff at my school. This can be difficult, therefore, having my own set would be ideal and save time, which is always vital when teaching students. In addition, I would like for my students each to have their own white board markers and permanent markers. White board markers are a necessity in my classroom during small groups. I can easily gauge how my students are doing as they write their responses on their white boards. Permanent markers are a fun tool for students to use when they are publishing their writing piece. Their art work and illustrations pop out with these markers and becomes a great motivational tool for my young authors.

The most challenging part of teaching is motivating my students to want to learn. If I could engage them with a new selection of read alouds and materials then I could get them to become excited.
