This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go." ~ Dr. Seuss ~ Knowledge is power and I want to give my students the power to choose the lives they will live.

My first years in education were spent in the classroom of an affluent, high-achieving school.

When I moved to the Phoenix area, I became a reading intervention teacher in a K-5 elementary school. The school where I work is a Title 1 school and we have 79.1% of students who receive free or reduced lunch. Each day I service twenty-six first through fourth grade students, who are either below or well-below grade level in reading. We practice phonemic awareness, decoding, reading fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. When I ask my students whom they read with at home, they generally say “nobody.” When I ask them what they read, they tell me they have no books because their parents or grandparents can’t afford them. Many of these students have never been to a library outside of school. My students are very excited to learn and live up to my high expectations every day.

My Project

My goal is to provide each of my students with one book a month for the next six months, which is rest of the school year. I have selected various levels and genres of books. They will be able to choose a new book each month that they can then take home and hopefully cherish for many years. I believe that this will boost not only their reading skills, but also their confidence.

Many of the children at my school receive donations of weekend food bags so they can have snacks over the weekend.

In my opinion, reading is not a priority for these children and their families, survival is. It is my sincere hope that I can help to break this cycle of poverty by encouraging my students to love reading while they are young, so that their future goals may include graduating from high school or attending college. I believe in all of my students and want them to succeed in life.
