My Project
This project will buy books for a small, alternative Middle School. We are a Title 1 school, and our students need a rich variety of books to read. While the number of students is less than that of a traditional middle school, many of our students love to read. My goal is to have a variety of books, including graphic novels, manga, informational books, and traditional chapter books for students to choose from. In addition to having voracious readers, I have many reluctant readers too. Having a wide variety of graphic novels and manga in particular helps me reach these students and show them how much fun reading can be. Eighth graders at my school are also challenging themselves to read as much as possible. Some of these students are telling me that they are running out of series to read in our little library. I am hoping to change that by writing grants and putting together DonorsChoose projects to find new books for our library.
With this project, I will be able to go into different classrooms and give book talks.
My hope is that I can entice existing readers into finding new material and coax reluctant readers into trying a new book. One way to increase literacy skills is to have students reading. As a librarian, if I am able to connect students to good books, their literacy skills are growing. Graphic novels and manga are often looked at as not having the complexity of a chapter book. However, these styles of books help students visualize the action, which increases literacy skills quite a bit. Just having books in the hands of students is extremely powerful. I want my students to have the same variety of books that a student in a traditional school would have.
